Review of Merrell Avalaunch

  • Great looking shoe that transitions effortlessly from trail to pub
  • Excellent traction on a variety of surfaces
  • Drains well
  • Minimalist shoe that allows you to feel the trail

  • Narrow toe box is not conducive for long runs
  • Lycra collar cannot be closed tightly around the ankle which allows debris in and allows the shoe to slip off easily
Overall – 6 out of 10

I just finished a week on the trails in the Merrell Avalaunch’s – one of Merrell’s new trail runners designed for the Tough Mudder in 2017.

At first blush, these trail runners have everything your looking for in an OCR shoe. An aggressive tread with ridges for rope climbs, stone guard, a durable fabric and mesh upper that drains easily, integrated Lycra gaiters/collar and quick laces.  They also feature a minimalist design with a 7mm drop and they’re light-weight at 9oz.

Ultimately though, they have some issues that prevent me from recommending them for any serious OCR events.

Review of the Hydra Cup

So, you wouldn’t think there would be much in the way of innovation with regards to supplement mixing bottles.  You know the ones I’m talking about – large size cups with screw on tops and some sort of ball or wire mixing contraption to blend your drinks.  For the most part, these bottles work well.  You might be thinking, why would I need anything more?  Well the Hydra Cup is here to prove you wrong.

Icebug Oribi – Trail & Road Racer

The 2017 Icebug Oribi are quite easy to write off on first glance; they just don’t look like trail shoes, much less a high-tech racer. The shiny bright blue upper is contrasted by a cute little bug in eye-catching orange with each shoe cinched up with thin, seemingly simple laces – so one could be forgiven if dismissed these as pretty walkers or everyday kicks. Of course, you’d be wrong.

Icebug makes great trail runners and has been a mainstay in OCR.  The new Oribi model (Mens and Womens) looks like a nice addition to their lineup.
